Since 2015 Frame, Swift & Partners have been performing laparoscopic (keyhole) spays/neutering on bitches. We have now neutered over 500 bitches using this technique with a very low complication rate.
With a traditional ‘spay’, both ovaries and the uterus are removed through an incision just below the belly button into the abdomen. In a keyhole spay, the ovaries are removed though two very short (5-11mm) incisions either side of the belly button. Both methods render the dog infertile and prevent pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.
Due to the specialist equipment required, keyhole surgery does cost more than a traditional spay, but most owners find the procedure is worth the increased cost due to the many advantages;
- Reduction of intra-operative pain normally associated with stretching or tearing the ligament attaching the ovary to the body wall.
- Shorter convalescence – 5 days lead walking compared to 10-14 days.
- Reduced risk of infection as the abdomen is never ‘open’.
- Reduced risk of intra-operative haemorrhage.
