What is a Pre-Purchase Examination?
A pre-purchase examination—often called a vetting—is a detailed clinical assessment carried out for a prospective buyer. Its purpose is to identify and evaluate any factors that could affect the horse’s suitability for its intended purpose.
Each examination is tailored to a specific purchaser, allowing the vet’s opinion to be given in the context of that buyer’s requirements and planned use of the horse. For this reason, vettings requested on behalf of a seller are generally not recommended, except in certain specified auction sales.
Across the UK, pre-purchase examinations follow a standardised protocol. Once the process is complete, you will receive a certificate outlining any significant findings.
Types of Examination
There are two main types of pre-purchase exams: the 2 Stage and the 5 Stage.
- A 2 Stage PPE covers the first two phases of the full 5 Stage process, performed with the same level of detail and care. Skipping the remaining three stages can mean certain issues go undetected. For this reason, the 5 Stage examination is generally recommended in most situations.
What We Need to Carry Out the Examination
Ideally, the horse should be examined in its usual surroundings, although this isn’t always possible. To complete the assessment, we require:
- A stable that can be darkened for the eye examination.
- A flat, firm area for trot-ups, plus space for lunging—preferably on a firm, level surface.
- For 5 Stage exams: a suitable area for the ridden phase in walk, trot, and canter (ideally an arena), as well as a rider to carry out this stage.
- The horse’s passport for identification.

This must be done prior to the vetting taking place.
